The Catacombs

Six million Parisians, rearranged underground.

The Catacombs

By the late 1700s, Paris's overflowing cemeteries were contaminating groundwater and collapsing into basements, so the city emptied them into abandoned limestone quarries beneath the 14th arrondissement. Workers spent decades transferring bones by torchlight, arranging skulls and femurs into the deliberate walls and patterns visitors walk past today — one of the largest ossuaries in the world.
