Unlike its more famous neighbor Île de la Cité, Île Saint-Louis was mostly farmland and grazing pasture until the 1600s, when property developers cut it into a grid of streets and built the elegant townhouses that still line it today. It has stayed almost entirely residential ever since — no major monuments, just one perfect main street and some of the best ice cream in Paris.

- Rue Saint-Louis-en-l'Île is the one commercial street, lined with small galleries, cheese shops, and independent boutiques
- The riverside quays offer some of the calmest views of the Seine anywhere in central Paris, with far fewer crowds than the mainland banks
