Jardin des Plantes

A royal medicine garden that grew into a natural history campus.

Jardin des Plantes

Founded in 1626 as a garden for growing medicinal plants for the king, the Jardin des Plantes expanded over four centuries into a sprawling complex housing France's natural history museum, a small historic zoo, tropical greenhouses, and some of the oldest botanical collections in Europe. It's quieter and less visited than Paris's more famous gardens, which is exactly its appeal.

Garden 7:30–20:00 (varies by season), Ménagerie and museum have separate hours and tickets

Tip
Combine the free garden with just one paid attraction rather than trying to see everything — the complex is larger than it looks on a map.
